Current Issues And Events Happening Around The World

  As of October 21, 2020 India, is ranked 2 nd in COVID-19 cases worldwide. It looks as if slowly, India will take over the USA in cases as well and potentially become the number 1 country with the most COVID-19 cases. Currently the USA has 8.35 million cases. There has been a total of 7.65 million cases in India, with 6.8 million people that have recovered from the virus, and 116,000 deaths. For a country like India to be 2 nd in total COVID-19 cases worldwide is very alarming and scary as the healthcare system in India is not the greatest. The healthcare system is actually very weak in India and I don’t see the case numbers going down anytime soon, unless some serious restrictions and lockdowns are put into place by the country officials. A recent report that was talked about on the CNN, discovered more than 63 million people in India may have actually been exposed to and may have contracted COVID-19.   There have been a very large number of forest fires happening in Syria which have been burning down a ton of land in the country, yet there is no media coverage happening about this issue. 80% of the forests have been burned down due to fires but the media is ignoring all of this. Due to these fires there has been a great loss of crops and an economic crisis on the way for the country. As of October 10, 2 people had been killed as a result of the fires and 70 were taken to hospital as they were having trouble breathing. Many people had to evacuate their homes as a precautionary measure. The whole country is a mess currently. Hundreds of hectares of land had been burned in the coastal Latakia and Tartus provinces as well as Homs province. Along with land being destroyed, many houses have also been destroyed and no support is being provided by the government or allied countries. In Nigeria, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad is being protested against. The Anti-Robbery Squad is a division that has been accused of abusing the human rights of the Nigerian youth for a very long time. A prime example of this is Obianuju Iloanya, whose brother was last seen 8 years ago, after being detained by the police unit, he was never seen again. Recently in the month of October 2020, a video surfaced online showing an officer from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad killing a male. After all of the protests taking place the president, Muhammadu Buhari announced that he will be disbanding the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. He also announced that he will be implementing a pay raise for Nigeria’s 350,000 police officers so they will be less tempted to extort the residents of Nigeria. The wildfires in California have been burning for a very long time. The fires have burned over 3.2 million acres of land. There have been around 28 major wildfires that approximately 16,500 fire fighters have been struggling with. 24 people have died and over 4,200 structures have been destroyed. The wildfires happening in California are a very big deal. There is so much land that has been burned and still burning till this day. President Donald Trump needs to stop treating the wildfires as a small issue and actually help out the state by any means necessary, instead of helping the president is just blaming the state. As of October 5 th , 2020, the fires reached another milestone of burning 4 million acres of the California state. I’ve heard of the wildfires happening in the states before but didn’t really pay much attention until I started researching the wildfires of California and was truly surprised.   There have been many reports of Muslim Uighurs and Kazakhs from Xinjiang being put in concentration camps. According to a recent report, more than a million Muslim Uighurs and Kazakhs have been put in these camps as of September 2020. The US is calling these centers concentration camps whereas, China is calling these centers education schools that prevent extremism. As of September 2020, there are 380 suspected facilities In Zinjiang. Most of the new facilities are prison style facilities, with lots of higher security features. These camps are housing mostly Muslim minorities. The people that are put in these camps are forced to do labour work and they also have their ‘’thoughts transformed’’.
